Are Lithium Batteries on a Yacht Safe?

Lithium batteries have become increasingly popular in recent years, thanks to their high energy density and long life. They are now commonly used on yachts to power movable equipment like jet skis, e-bikes, sea bobs, and electric hydrofoil boards.

However, the safety of these batteries have come under scrutiny, as it seems that  many fires have originated from lithium batteries that were left on charge and unattended on board.

It's important to understand that lithium batteries can be dangerous if not handled properly. They can overheat and catch fire or even explode if they are damaged, overcharged, or exposed to high temperatures. Therefore, it is crucial to take the necessary precautions when using lithium batteries on a yacht.

Here are some safety tips to follow:

1. Store and charge lithium batteries in designated fireproof storage boxes.

Lithium batteries should be stored and charged in designated boxes that are specifically designed to contain the spread of fire. These boxes should be located in an area that is well-ventilated and away from flammable materials. When the equipment is not in use and stored then the batteries should be charged till they reach about 60% capacity.

2. Use the charging equipment originally delivered with the device.

It is also recommended to use the original charging cables that were delivered with the battery, as using non-approved cables can result in damage or overheating.Furthermore it is verry important the battery should be disconnected to the charger when fully charged.

3. Never charge damaged batteries

Replace damaged or possibly damaged batteries. Remove them as soon as possible form the yacht and never try to charge them as this will most likely result in and overload causing fire or even explosions.

4. Never leave lithium batteries unattended or unsecured.

Lithium batteries should never be left unattended or unsecured on a yacht, even uncharged batteries can cause fire. They should always be properly stored and secured when not in use to prevent them from moving around and potentially causing damage.

In conclusion, lithium batteries are generally safe to use on a yacht as long as they  are handled and stored properly. It is important to follow the above safety tips to minimize the risk of fire or explosion. We recommend to take the necessary precautions, by procuring secure storage and charging boxes/areas so you can enjoy the benefits of lithium batteries without compromising your safety on board.
